Birthday/Zodiac: Febuary 28th, 1682 / The Devil Bird, Sign of Discovery
Gender: Agender (they/them)
Orientation: anxiety
Breed: Sardine Hippocampus
Build/Looks: Scrawny/sickly disposition. Natural high-stepping, uphill gait but is often drastically mellowed due to a limp — prefers to stay at a walk but can trot quick with some adrenaline. Strong Baroque influence; lusitano, campolina, perhaps some lighter breeds. Feminine. Smaller than Cricket. 15.2hh. Sooty buckskin roan.
Voice/Face Claim: Higher than you'd expect, but aggressive and mumbles a lot. / tba

Talents: perception (maxed) / herbalist (lvl 1)
Blessings: Plant Manipulation (maxed) / ---

Herd Affiliation: War-Forged
Rank: Farmer (maxed) (post chpt. 5: Newt has begun very inconsistently learning Medical practices under Estelle. Take 'apprenticeship' with a grain of salt, as they are still most often home, but Newt has started to refer to themself as a Medic regardless and will correct you pretty belligerently. More or less for the sole purpose of not being a farmer, and has little knowledge onto what the title actually ensues.)
Patron God: Kaia
Home: "Lachlan/Lachlan's" a hundred+ acre farm growing an assessment of root vegetables and wildflowers in the Spring. Located in the South-West side of the Farmlands. Will make an occasional trip to Skeldr for assisting in selling goods.

Relatives: Cricket (twin), Samari (father), a ton of brothers
Significant Other: ew
Relations: Brom (father figure), Tiresias (flamen), Killian (employer), Baheera (is very kind to them), Twitch (confusing), Isaac (friend!)
Family and Relations
religious thoughts
    - Their household worships Kaia without question, all of Sam's boy were taught to pray before and after bed.
    - Currently, Newt is angry and hurt by Kaia's apparent disregard for their brother's injury and their request for a separated torso. Though they still pray daily, they've nearly given up on their childhood apologies. Besides the common thanks, they seem to be resentful and primarily silent toward the gods, but can occasionally lash out at Kaia under their breath— something they hope she doesn't hear.
    - They try to minimize their opinions on the matter drastically for Cricket, who finds great comfort in the Gods.
    - Newt is very conflicted on Cricket's new found interest in Argus, and despite his occasionally heated denial, they try to remind him it's very unlikely that their birth parents worshipped him. Especially while they ended up stuck in Onea.
    - (post chpt. 5) They are curious of Cricket's new blessing, but also a bit hurt as to why Kaia would bless their brother without confronting their own prayers as well. Was she finally answering them and trying to help Cricket? Newt's confused and unsure if they should send thanks.

political thoughts
    - Due to a restrictive childhood, Newt knows very little about the herd past their father's property. Yet they have recently discovered most of its cruel take on their mutated disability which has failed to lighten their bitter attitude toward those besides Cricket. They tend to be especially annoyed by higher ranks and their perceived entitlement, specifically raiders. They hate that farmers are mocked and labeled as 'soft'.
    - They surprisingly adore Skeldr for its small portion of arts and the collection of medical knowledge
    - Hira as War-Lord is seen as a bit underqualified as Newt has learned that mares are merely supposed to benefit the male figure. However, they have a higher respect for a certain few and have actually grown to prefer a mare's presence to a stallion's in many cases due to their less intimidating stature.
    - Newt depicts a stallion's role as powerful and liable, and though they've been taught to treat them politely through reinforcement, most manners tend to stem from a place of fear rather than genuine respect— despite a few recent cases. They tend to behave most often around those larger than them but are more comfortable around those with a less daunting appearance.
    - Though still nervous to develop their more feminine characteristics, Newt identifies as agender and in turn, respects others who identify as trans or non-binary. Their opinion on gay relationships is overwhelmingly accepting (... more obviously outside their household) due to their suspicion of Cricket's sexuality. In reality, they are actually quite spiteful toward homophobia due to the shame it brings their brother, and usually attempt to counteract it despite Cricket's wishes. Of course, they can be quite hypocritical, as any of their own curiosity toward the same sex is preferably hidden.
    - (post chpt. 5) Despite no prior knowledge on the Bloody Flanks or Killian's dealings with them, after being dragged onto The Trespasser in chapter 5, Newt has been plagued with a deep-rooted fear of the flanks after their initial hissy fit wasn't taken seriously. Since returning home, they've refused to speak of the experience and have been struggling with some nightmares.
    - (recently) After meeting Bix and Isaac, Newt has developed a firm appreciation for Rangers and holds some form of jealousy toward their occupation. They admire their disconnection from herd life and most individuals, and are silently frustrated that it is not something they feel they can pursue.
Personality Type: INTJ — Aura
Drive: Protection, Healing, Control

    intelligent, anxious, compassionate
aggressive→ violent, untrusting→ perceptive, low confidence→ self-destructive, protective→ overbearing (..but with good intent)

"I'm a frightened, fickle person. Fighting, cryin', kickin', cursin'.
What should I do?"

A once faint-hearted child turned bitter with responsibility and beaten scars, Newt has learned to mask an inner feeling of helplessness with anger and only more violence.

Thanks to the stressful childhood conditioning of keeping their brother safe, they see the world as a cold place and struggle drastically with trusting those around them. They are smart, and read others carefully, but assume the worst— first and foremost— tending to insinuate the worst in themself to counteract it. With nerves that instigates braced muscles and hyper-vigilant suspicion, Newt's "worst" is quite a hostile, up-tight creature. Their emotions are explosive, unstable, and to them, very often humiliating when they can not gain proper control.

Their embarrassment tends to go past normal, however, as Newt's self-worth seems to tremble often. They can become angry at themself for their over-the-top aggression or lack of social skills and may not always believe they are worthy of fair treatment. This can quickly have them spiraling downward, as their temper doesn't truly come from a place of ill-will, but anxiety. They tend to become incredibly balky at situations they cannot attack or do not understand and can take extra time to work through these mental-blocks. Despite their ironic trigger at violence, they tend to go looking for it when their nervous energy ramps above boiling point, making them easily susceptible to self-destruction, especially without an alternative outlet.

On the surface, Newt tends to be shrouded in poor light. Yet to their twin brother, they can switch to almost an entirely different role— the bigger ("bigger") twin or the parent. Most of Newt's triggers come from the idea of losing their brother entirely, and they'll work hard to prevent that, no matter the labels acquired— something that may push them to be a bit overbearing and coddling. However, they come with good intentions and try to treat Cricket with a gentle and caring patience, even despite their struggle with sensitivities. An effort that others have merely taken for granted and lost privileges to, however, Newt still holds a natural empathy and a good heart— even despite a few black eyes. Maybe a surprise, they actually hold mostly "soft" interests regardless of their wannabe-tough-guy appearance and can come off as quite feminine if they're not careful. In the end, Newt would much rather enjoy a walk in the park than drinking or brawling.

In fact, it seems like Newt shines best outside the fighting ring, as with a skinny frame, wobbling gait, and mutated disability, it most often leaves them bloodied in the snow. Instead, as shown by their heightened level of perception, they are surprisingly intelligent, and should their hot-headed temper subside, Newt does very well with a thinking disposition. They have potential, however, their current rash defense and straightforward bluntness prevents them from swinging any impressive form of cunning... at least, not just yet.

other: they're hurt and could really use a hug / they love bright colors and flowers / plays the harmonica and likes to sing but is embarressed of it - just wanted to be a musician as a kid but that light burned out pretty quick / scared of water, loud noises, and big presences / chews on their front legs under severe stress / uneducated past their own finds / heartbroken about Cricket / anger is just a BIG coping mechanism / throws a lot of temper tantrums / a big prude who hardly likes being looked at

History (Warning: Contains mentions of physical abuse.)
Childhood

The twins were placed into Samari's care as newborns with no prior recollection of their mother or birthplace. Something they'd later learn to only mean they were 'abandoned' or 'unwanted' by their own blood, at least according to a handful of their siblings. Maybe a small sore-spot but the subject was hardly worth dwelling on, after all, they had a family: a father and brothers— many brothers.

Lachlan was a farm owned and managed by a pegasus stallion closer in build to a slim Aodhian than someone who could survive Onea's harsh winters. He had no family but obtained the over hundred acre farm through sly words and precise footing. While pride came with the land, upkeep struggled drastically without helping hands, and with faltering crops, came faltering pay. Maybe it was surprising when Samari's solution came in the form of a few orphaned boys, cheap and capable of work at the mere cost of a bed to sleep in and a few slices of bread, adoption soon became the quickest way to flourishing fields. Of course, the line between proper parental care and a mere employer staggered only when there was room for harsh words and a strict clap back into shape. If care was questionable, love was almost nonexistent and instead, the boys took on much of the same harsh behavior they received from their father. Many grew to seem quite 'off' because of it, brawling was commonplace alongside swears and general hostility, and manners only seemed to surface under an adult's familiar cold gaze.

In a few years time, the fields were bustling with children and Samari's large farmhouse was filled with twin beds and boisterous young voices. Only did the number of adopted boys begin to cease when their father was handed an unlikely pair. The twins were strange, mutated, with colliding limbs and twisting organs, the two were attached at the hip, literally, and split off at the shoulder. An interesting concept, conjoined twins. One that was sure to bring a sum of money if the need arose. With spindly legs and a lameness in occasionally all six of them, the newborn twins were hardly liable for pulling a plow when they first arrived but earned their keep by providing a safety net. They were insurance, a frail novelty in the eyes of an Aodhian aristocrat, and Sam knew it. Hence, for the beginning of their life, the two were sheltered from the outside world and Onea's ableist community, dormant to their father's farmhouse for fear of a preying slave-trader while the two were still too young to comprehend any of it.

But slowly, the twins grew to maintain a wobbly gait that consisted of mobility gear and much rest in-between movement, they were named to match each other about as well as their looks, not exact, but remarkably similar, and undoubtedly part of a matched set. On the left, Kelley's nose was dotted with a white snip, while Kala's was painted with a stripe. While their white facial markings differed enough for those who spared any attention, apart from their deformity, they were actually quite insignificant. They flaunted no feathers like their father, or any marvelous horn from their beloved Earth God— just an unsteady step and a coat coloration that resembled nothing more than the soil they tilled.

Newt, or merely Kelley at the time, was a timid and shy personality who seemed to grow slower than their twin, and only held weight after excess difficulty. Kala was a bit taller, a bit stronger, and oh so curious of the world around him, and Newt admired him immensely for it. His presence felt warm compared to the rest of their family, and they hid behind his bravery with thorough idolization when their father yelled or struck out. It did not take long for the rest of the already aggressive boys to label the twins as different and in turn, they were tormented for both their conjoined disability and their proclaimed 'spoiled' treatment. Something that Newt could only seem to meet with constant tears at the time— they were scared of and angry at their brothers all at once. The child began to turn to panic more often than not, crying and humming with anxiety, but behind Kala's figure, they were regarded as no more than a harmless annoyance.

By seven, the odd pair of twins were finally pushed past their small yard, and out into the fields to tend to farmwork alongside their older brothers. With a limping gait and colliding legs, they were slow, and their small figures struggled to keep up with their siblings. Taunting was evident and what seemed like unavoidable, especially without their father's watchful eye, but neither of the twins had experienced any real physical damage until they were pushed into the fields day after day. Kala took the brunt of it, all in defense of his fearful twin until unrelenting violence became out of hand, and he was forced into silence and a numbed comatose.

The accident was devastating, and it dug into Kelley's heart about as deep as it did their brother's head. Heartbroken, Newt feared they would lose him entirely as he fell in and out of consciousness, yet all they could do was cry into his crumpled figure and insist to unlistening ears that he'd be better soon. In those few days of eerie silence, Newt held him close, but their small body trembled, and they missed their brother.

Yet miraculously, and slowly, Kala's health increased. But he felt different, he felt... empty. When he could manage to stay awake, he was dull and tired and stared at his twin with a look of monotone, curious confusion. His tongue couldn't stumble out their name, and Kelley wondered if he even remembered it— a thought that made their insides twist. Their brother's head faced traumatic damage and his voice was hindered. Yet their grieving period was short-lived, and as Kala's walking improved, their father insisted that Kelley wipe their tears and get up and going. The insisting was constant as the smaller twin struggled between mental blocks and choking sobs. They didn't want to work, they wanted to hug their brother tight until he healed but Samari merely grew irritated with their faint heart.

In turn, Kelley was forced out of their box as their father weighted them with Kala's sickly wellbeing and provided them, singlehandedly with enough punishment for them both should either falter. Slowly conditioned to associate Kala's lack of safety or correct behavior with another beating, Kelley's anxiety only initiated an unstable protectiveness of their brother and irregulated emotions that spurred unnecessary violence, panic, or a ray of tears and curses. Their growing hostility was proving to fit in with their older brothers remarkably well and suddenly, Kala's childhood role of protector was handed down to his twin's flighty, fear-driven defense. Though their father ignored their childish nicknames, Newt was a name that came in par with their aggression, similar to the jab it was at their mockable 'extra limbs', and in sync, Cricket became a just as steady identification due to his quieted voice.

Adolescence

They had both changed but Newt still clung to their brother in search of comfort and an absent familiarity. Along with their proclaimed protectiveness, came unreasonable guilt at their brother's crushed state, and without a medic in sight, Newt soon found the unrelenting responsibility of both his safety and healing pushed into their lap. Behind thanks, countless mantras of "please heal Kala" were added to their daily prayers, alongside the constant request to please give them each their own body. Newt's early adolescence was filled with apologies to their beloved Earth God, they didn't know what they did to deserve their brother's wavering absence or their mutated appearance but they were so very sorry, and begged for any ounce of forgiveness.

As they grew, their workload steadily began to increase to something beyond the minimum, and though Newt was still small and skinny, their walking had improved remarkably to where they could often hobble even without the assistance of their leg braces. In turn, Cricket's matching birth defect was showing the same progression, but his accident held him back and his head was still drastically hindered. Instead, he was accompanied by migraines, vertigo, and memory loss— but his personality was growing. A bit different, but it was coming back and his voice cracked with a warmth Newt had desperately missed. Yet he struggled in the fields, the work was especially strenuous for an injured child, and it slowed them both— and though Newt's snarling glare and explosive anger guarded Cricket, they were forced to accommodate his inadequacies at their own expense.

Embarked with harsh treatment and a strenuous workload, Newt was doing poorly. With piling stress and unmanageable ferocity, they became angry with Kaia for her lacking consideration, or even acknowledgment, and their trust dwindled down to Cricket. Their brother who was proving to act oddly childish as he grew more outgoing. He lacked understanding in many areas and struggled to remember them, and laughed and cried with a certain disconnect. It wasn't long before Newt realized that if they wanted their brother to heal, or for them to even appear normal with separation, they'd have to do it on their own.

For once, they were in luck, and as they spread into their teens, the twins were granted a looser reign thanks to Newt's cautious eye. To assist in larger chores, they were allowed to trail their brothers past their property's borders, into the farmlands and an occasional trip to Skeldr. Outside their siblings' insults, Onea's take on their mutation stung something brutal. But between the cracks of ableism and shame, there were spots of healing and mesmerizing artistry. Though they tried to keep it hidden, Newt's ambition flourished at the concept of medicine, despite the fact they lacked even a basic education past pulling weeds. But that didn't matter, they were going to do it. Newt was a poor combination of a rash temper and limping gait, but they were not going to be pathetic, and they were not going to be worthless.

    Just you wait.

other: has grown to accept and almost prefer "Newt" over "Kelley" but warms up to their birth name when it's used positively— ends up referring to Cricket as Kala when they're worried / dealt with a lot of handsy brothers when they were little— really dislikes touch / they've hardly tried to transform into their hippocampus form, and have nearly created a mental block against the idea / stole their harmonica from one of their brothers when they were little (it was brought home by Raine) / tattooed when they were 17 and were in big trouble, but they still love the tat / they have been in control of absolutely nothing in their life.. and try to control almost everything in consequence. yet it doesn't always play out

Familiar:
Marci / Mars
female, 3 yrs, domestic dog, mutt, light and fluffy— average height

Docile and mothering; friendly and persistent, loyal to a fault but typically untrusting initially. Can be protective but not naturally aggressive. High energy but attentive.

Found when returning home from being trapped on The Trespasser after chapter 5, during the journey, the dog seems to have attached herself specifically to the twins after being spared a bit of dinner. Despite their initial disgust (and thrown stones), she's hung specifically close to Newt's heels. Upon returning home, Mars has won both a name, and quite a strong favor. With their father allowing the animal to stay for the time being due to the pitifully fragile state both twins returned in, Marci is proving to be exceptionally therapeutic for Newt, helping to combat anger and lessen poor thinking.

- Since traveling to Aodh, Newt had decided to leave Mars with Brom in the farmlands, due to their worry regarding Marci's safety and ability to travel, let alone handle Valore. She quite misses her Newt and seems to nap more now that they're gone, however, she does enjoy chasing chickens occasionally, and seems to drift around Brom's property line quite often. In Aodh, it doesn't seem Newt realizes how much they actually miss their dog, but their temper seems less manageable in areas Marci could once mellow it.
